For 2005, front, front side and side curtain airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) come standard on all Accord Coupe models. V-6 models get the added stability of the Traction Control System (TCS). The Accord Coupe is designed using the advanced NASTRAN stress analysis software. It allows engineers to "crash test" the body structures even before they're rendered in metal. A steel prototype body is then constructed and tested. Real-world testing verifies the computer predictions. As a result, the Accord Coupe earned top 5-star crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in frontal and side impact testing.

*NHTSA frontal crash test conducted in December 2002; side crash test in January 2003.

SAFETY FEATURES

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control during hard braking.
The front and rear crush zones provide driver and passenger protection in moderate-to-severe full-frontal and offset-frontal impacts.
The Accord Coupe features a highly rigid unit body that helps achieve exceptional structural rigidity and enviable safety rating. Forty-eight percent of the frame assembly is made of high-tensile steel, helping it to better absorb impact forces from the front, sides and rear, as well as the roof, in the event of a rollover.
The dual side-impact door beams help provide protection in a side impact.
In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, the dual-stage, dual threshold front airbags (SRS) inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second, and are designed to help prevent head and upper-body injuries.
In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Plus the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect the height and seating position of the occupant. If a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the deployment path of the side airbag, sensors deactivate it.
All five seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The outboard rear seats feature the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
Front 3-point seat belts with an automatic tensioning system ride across the lap and chest to help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
The side curtain airbag module is positioned along the side of the headliner. In the event of a sufficient side impact, this system will activate to help provide protection for both front and rear passengers. A new type of inflator provides an exceptionally quick inflation time.
The system immobilizes the engine's fuel injection and ignition, and only a matching digital code in the ignition key can override it. When the driver puts the key into the ignition switch, the switch transmits a signal that reads the code in the key. If the key code agrees with the code in the Immobilizer unit, the powertrain control module (PCM) starts the engine.
