The i-VTEC® engine enhances the effect of VTEC® on the 6-cylinder engine by adding Variable Cylinder Management. This revolutionary feature allows the rear bank of three cylinders on the V-6 engine to be activated or deactivated, depending upon driving demands, which as a result, saves fuel while also decreasing emissions.
The engine in the Pilot has an advanced 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC aluminum-block and -head design, which makes it more compact, lighter and more powerful than many competitive SUV powerplants. The Pilot delivers acceleration performance along with the ability to tow up to 4,500 pounds.
This transmission uses the engine's broad torque curve for brisk acceleration, optimal fuel economy and smooth-shifting characteristics.
This system consists of an electronic position sensor connected to the accelerator pedal that sends a signal to the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU combines the accelerator-position signal from the driver with data such as engine rpm, coolant temperature and road speed, and then determines the optimum position for the throttle plate. It then sends a signal to the DBW driver unit that electronically operates a stepper motor on the throttle body. The stepper motor opens and closes the throttle to the exact position necessary for proper engine response.
Get the show on the road. The EX-L model's available factory-integrated DVD Entertainment System keeps rear passengers smiling as they enjoy a favorite movie, their own particular music selection or even a video game on the new nine-inch screen.
The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System provides driving directions to virtually anywhere in the 48 contiguous states,* plus an eight-gigabyte database will direct you to 7,000,000 points of interest. It responds to preprogrammed voice commands, such as "find nearest ATM" or "go home." When traveling in rural areas or in designated off-road driving areas where no map is available, the system displays electronic "bread crumbs" onscreen to mark your pathso you can retrace your steps without worry or guesswork. The screen also displays the image from the rearview camera when the vehicle is in reverse.
When the clutches are energized and engaged by the VTM-4® ECU up to 55% of the engine's power is diverted to the rear wheels so they can work with the front wheels to provide 4-wheel drive. The ECU seamlessly engages the system to help provide optimum traction at all times, whether driving on pavement, snow or dirt.
Powered by the intelligence of i-VTEC® technology, VCM® quickly and seamlessly activates or deactivates the three rear cylinders, depending on the driver's needs. So you get the best of both worlds: V-6 power when accelerating or climbing, as well as the efficiency of a smaller engine while cruising.
The Pilot's VTM-4® system operates automatically. But when you need to start off in extreme low-traction conditions such as when stopped in mud, on ice or in loose gravel, the thoughtful VTM-4® Lock feature lets you manually lock the rear differential to help get you moving. And it can stay manually locked up to 18 mph.
