Honda's Safety for Everyone philosophy is more than a motto—it takes shape in the advanced safety features of our vehicles.

The Pilot puts that philosophy in action, and the proof is in a 5-star rating the vehicle earned in frontal- and side-impact testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).* In fact, several 2005 Honda models have received this 5-star crash-test rating, the highest offered by the NHTSA. Additional safety features include three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control. Plus, Pilot models with the navigation system feature a standard rearview camera that helps you avoid obstacles behind you. So it comes as no surprise that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has recognized the Honda Pilot as a 2007 "Top Safety Pick."

SAFETY FEATURES

Pilot's anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses a special modulator to pulse the brakes to help prevent wheel lockup. This helps the driver retain steering control when braking hard. The Electronic Brake Distribution system (EBD) balances the front/rear braking forces during dynamic loading.
In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, the dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second and are designed to help prevent serious head and upper-body injuries.
The front and rear crush zones help provide driver and passenger protection in frontal and rear impacts.
In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver's or front passenger's upper body. Plus, the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect the height and seating position of the occupant. If a child or small-statured adult is leaning into the deployment path of the side airbag, sensors deactivate it.
All eight seats are equipped with 3-point seat belts. The second-row seat features the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) mounting system for use with compatible child seats.
The chassis of the Pilot utilizes unit-body construction with extensive cross-bracing and stiffening members incorporated into key areas. This improves strength and durability during light off-highway driving conditions, and reduces road noise and vibration in conventional driving situations.
Front and rear 3-point seat belts with pretensioners ride across the lap and chest to help restrain occupants during sudden stops or impact.
The dual side-impact door beams help provide protection in a side impact.
Pilot provides standard side curtain airbags for all three rows of seats. In addition to the protection they offer outboard occupants in the event of a side impact, these side curtain airbags are fitted with a rollover sensor to help provide protection in a rollover. Most side curtain airbags in this class are designed to provide side-impact protection, but rarely do they also provide protection in the event of a rollover.
This sophisticated safety device aids the driver in retaining control of the vehicle if wheel slippage is detected. When the driver is cornering or must make a sudden maneuver, the system may engage if traction loss is detected, to help restore the driver's intended course.
The system immobilizes the engine's fuel injection and ignition, and only a matching digital code in the ignition key can override it. When the driver puts the key into the ignition switch, the switch transmits a signal that reads the code in the key. If the key code agrees with the code in the powertrain control module, the engine starts.
